Scotch — Distance and Aspiration

Scotch carried a different kind of authority. Rye belonged to the street; Scotch suggested that a man had moved beyond it. The drink had an unmistakable sense of distance. It came from somewhere else, crossed an ocean, and arrived with an aura of expense and sophistication. For a gangster trying to demonstrate that he had graduated from neighborhood hustler to serious player, that distinction could be valuable. A glass of Scotch could quietly tell the room that the man holding it now had access to things ordinary people could not easily obtain.

There was also a psychological message in Scotch: I can afford to wait. The drink did not have the rough immediacy associated with a shot of whiskey taken quickly at a neighborhood bar. Scotch could be sipped slowly while conversations unfolded, deals were discussed, and other men revealed more than they intended. For a gangster, patience was not simply good manners. It could be a form of power. The man who remained calm while everyone else became anxious often controlled the room without ever raising his voice.

But Scotch could also be theater. Not every man ordering an expensive imported whiskey had the wealth, connections, or sophistication he wanted people to believe he possessed. That was part of the attraction. In the underworld, appearance could be almost as valuable as reality. A carefully chosen bottle, an expensive suit, and the right table in the right nightclub could create the impression of a man who had arrived—even when his position was still being built.

Scotch therefore represented more than refinement. It represented aspiration backed by performance. It was the drink of a gangster who wanted to put some distance between himself and the neighborhood he had escaped. The message was no longer I’m one of you. It was I’ve moved up, and you should recognize it. In a world obsessed with hierarchy, that subtle shift could be worth more than the price of the bottle.
