Located at the corner of Broadway and 58th Avenue, The Rendezvous Club was a notorious speakeasy during the era of Prohibition. Infamous for its connections to the underground world, the club was once under the iron-fisted rule of Red Sheehan, a fearsome figure known for his ruthless tactics. However, his reign came to an end when he was apprehended and sent to Sing Sing. In contrast, the amiable Jim Redmond served as the frontman, skillfully maintaining a facade of charm and cordiality for the patrons. The club’s dark history also entangled itself with the story of millionaire poloist Howard Lee and theater star Frances Williams, who found love within its dimly lit confines.
Notorious Broadway night club owner, fight manager, and racehorse owner, Frank Marlow, was also part-owner of The Rendezvous Club along with another establishment called the Silver Slipper, which boasted Evelyn Nesbit, Harry Thaw’s former wife, as its dancing attraction. Tragedy struck when Frank Marlow was discovered late one evening, lifeless and abandoned, with three fatal gunshot wounds to his temple, jaw, and neck. The sinister circumstances surrounding his death sent shockwaves through the underground scene and stirred whispers of rivalries and vendettas that had plagued the speakeasy world. The Rendezvous Club remained a symbol of clandestine allure and danger, forever tied to the untold stories of those who found themselves entangled within its secretive walls.
