The 300 Club holds a storied history in the realm of illicit Prohibition-era ventures, spearheaded by the renowned emcee of the El Fey Club, Texas Guinan. Embarking on her journey as a shrewd entrepreneur during the 1920s, Guinan established this exclusive imbibing establishment, which would become the first of many such ventures. The 300 Club gained notoriety for its extravagant parties, attracting an eclectic mix of socialites, artists, and gangsters eager to revel in its secret speakeasy allure. However, its success came at a price, as it repeatedly faced shutdowns due to its illegal nature. Undeterred, Texas Guinan would cleverly relaunch the club under different names and in varying locations, often in the general vicinity of the West 50s. Among her subsequent enterprises were illustrious establishments like The Argonaut, Salon Royale, and Club Intime, cementing her legacy as “The Queen of the Night Clubs” and leaving an indelible mark on the history of New York’s roaring twenties nightlife.
